Venue: Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
Where to Stay
Golden Gate Park is inside the city, not an hour from it, so where you sleep decides your whole weekend. The park has no on-site lodging and there's no camping, so you're choosing a San Francisco neighborhood and a commute style: walk, MUNI, or the festival shuttle.
The festival is sold out and the city fills up around it, so treat anything under a mile of the park as gone unless you booked months ago. The good news for a trip-first plan: SF's transit actually works, so a hotel two or three neighborhoods away is a 20-minute ride, not a dealbreaker.
- Walk to the park — Inner Sunset & Inner Richmond. The two neighborhoods hugging the park's south and north edges. You can walk to a gate in 15–25 minutes, head home after RÜFÜS DU SOL without a rideshare, and eat some of the best cheap food in the city on the way (Irving Street ramen, Clement Street dim sum). Mostly small hotels and short-term rentals, so book early or not at all.
- On foot with character — Haight-Ashbury (≈20-min walk). A walk to the east entrance through the actual Summer-of-Love blocks, and steps from the Panhandle. Characterful and a little gritty. Best for travelers who want the festival on foot and don't mind boutique-hotel pricing.
- The smart base — Hayes Valley & Civic Center. More hotel inventory and excellent restaurants, and you're a block or two from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, where the official festival shuttle departs — so you skip rideshare surge entirely. If you're optimizing the whole weekend, book here.
- Most rooms & easy airport — Downtown / Union Square. The deepest hotel inventory and the simplest SFO connection, at the cost of a longer haul to the park. Fine if you're pairing the festival with a few normal tourist days; take MUNI's N-Judah toward the park rather than driving.
Whatever you book, confirm it's genuinely near a MUNI line or the shuttle pickup. A cheap room in a car-dependent pocket of the city will cost you the savings back in rideshare surcharges by Sunday.
Getting There
Flying: SFO is the obvious airport, 30–45 minutes to most neighborhoods by rideshare or a straight BART shot downtown. OAK (Oakland) is often cheaper and only marginally farther via BART.
Getting to the park: Do not plan to drive and park at Golden Gate Park — there's effectively no festival parking and the surrounding streets are permit-choked. Your three real options are the official Outside Lands shuttle (prepaid, round-trip, from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium downtown), MUNI (the N-Judah and the 5-Fulton drop you at the edges), or rideshare to the designated zones. The shuttle is the least stressful by a wide margin.
Insider tip: stay near the Bill Graham Civic and buy the shuttle pass. You trade a 10-minute walk for zero parking anxiety and zero end-of-night rideshare surge, which after a 10-hour day in the fog is worth more than it sounds.
Where to Eat
Most festivals, you eat to survive. At Outside Lands you plan around it. The on-site program pulls in dozens of the Bay Area's best restaurants plus a chef roster that this year features Tyler Florence, Nancy Oakes of Boulevard, and James Beard finalist Melissa King — and the GastroMagic stage literally crosses cooking with live music. Come hungry; the crab roll and the garlic fries are the traditions for a reason.
Off-site, you're in one of America's great food cities. If you're staying in the Inner Sunset or Richmond, walk Irving or Clement Street for ramen, dim sum, and Burmese before you ever hit a gate. Insider tip: eat a real breakfast in your neighborhood before you go in — you'll want your festival stomach for the inside food, not for 11am fuel.
The Fog Is Part of the Ticket
San Francisco in August is not summer weather, and Outside Lands is the festival that catches everyone off guard. Highs sit in the low 60s; once the fog and the ocean wind come in off the Pacific in the late afternoon, it drops into the 50s and stays there. People who packed for a California music festival spend Saturday night shivering in a merch hoodie they overpaid for.
Dress in layers you can carry: a real jacket, long pants, closed shoes for the damp meadow grass. Insider tip: bring a small drawstring bag for the layers you shed during the two warm midday hours, because you will want every one of them back by the headliner.
It Sold Out. Here's How to Still Go.
2026 is sold out, waitlist only through the official site. That doesn't mean you're locked out — it means your path is resale and planning, not the box office. Watch the official Front Gate waitlist and the verified resale market, and know the rule that trips people up: passes are wristband-only, and a 3-Day wristband has to be sold as all three days, so single-day resale of a 3-Day pass isn't a real thing.
Insider tip: if the festival itself falls through, the Outside Lands Night Shows — official club gigs by festival artists across the city that week — are a cheaper, sneaky-good way to catch some of the same names indoors and warm.
Make It a San Francisco Weekend
This is the festival's real advantage over the desert: when the music stops, you're in San Francisco, not a parking lot in Indio. Build in a day. Golden Gate Park itself hides the de Young Museum, the Japanese Tea Garden, and the Botanical Garden, all a short walk from the festival footprint. Push west and you hit Ocean Beach and the Lands End trail; the festival's main stage borrowed that name for a reason.
Insider tip: give yourself the Monday. A morning at Ocean Beach or a slow walk through the Presidio is the exact decompression a three-day fog-soaked festival calls for, and flights out Monday afternoon are usually cheaper than the Sunday-night scramble.
